HELENA, Mont. – The Crow Nation this week will welcome up to 50,000 or more spectators to its 100th annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow and Rodeo, and the Department of Commerce will be there to celebrate the milestone and help to share it with the world.

Tribal members will host a Facebook Live event in which they’ll broadcast Friday evening’s grand entry while interpreting Crow powwow culture and traditions. The event will be streamed through Commerce’s official Visit Montana Facebook page, which has more than 500,000 followers from across the world.

“Attending the Crow Fair is an opportunity not to be missed, and it’s a great honor to share this Apsáalooke tradition with a global audience that’s very interested in learning about and experiencing Native American cultures in Montana,” said Commerce Director Pam Haxby-Cote.

Commerce staff will also help to coordinate film crews, which will be on location to experience the fair and assist in the sharing of this important Crow event.

The Crow Fair opened Wednesday and continues through Monday, August 20. It includes parades, a multi-day powwow, a rodeo, horse racing and Indian Relay. It is the largest Native American event in Montana and is said to be one of the largest powwows in the country.

“It’s great to be here for the centennial Crow Fair,” said Crow Tribe Secretary R. Knute Old Crow. “We hold this celebration every year to celebrate life and showcase Apsáalooke culture. But, it’s not about showing off; it’s a way of showing who we are and how far we’ve come together to maintain our dignity and our identity. We thank the Department of Commerce for their partnership with the Crow Tribe in sharing this unique experience with the world.”

Commerce works in partnership with the tribal nations of Montana to grow economic prosperity in Indian Country, including through tourism with authentic first-voice interpretation.
