HELENA, Mont. – Filmmakers who shot “Buster’s Mal Heart” in the Kalispell area will return to Montana this weekend for screenings of the film and for scouting locations to shoot future projects.

Buster’s Mal Heart” is a mystery/thriller in which the title character is haunted by visions of a past life while being pursued by the authorities. It stars Emmy winner Rami Malek, known for the USA Network series “Mr. Robot.” The cast also includes Montana actress Lily Gladstone.

Since its debut, the film has enjoyed national press and screenings at major events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Fest and the Tribeca Film Festival.

“Film projects have a positive economic impact on the communities in which they’re shot and bring significant attention to Montana both as a film location and a travel destination,” said Montana Film Commissioner Allison Whitmer. “This project has the bonus of Emmy star power behind it and is already generating quite a buzz.”

Following in the footsteps of Kelly Reichardt’s critical success, “Certain Women,” which filmed in the Livingston area, the Montana Film Office at the Department of Commerce has amplified its outreach to female filmmakers to consider Montana as a location for their projects.

“Buster’s Mal Heart” shot in and around Kalispell for 18 days in the fall of 2015. After first considering her home state of Colorado, writer/director Sarah Adina Smith said she ultimately decided on Montana because it “fit the natural spirit of the script.” The project also received a Big Sky Film Grant for $32,000.

Smith and producer Jonako Donley will participate in screenings this weekend in Missoula and Helena.

In Missoula, the Roxy Theater will host screenings at 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. on Friday, each followed by a Q & A session. Tickets are $8. The film will continue to screen at the Roxy at least through May 25.

In Helena, the Myrna Loy Center will host a screening at 7 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a Q & A session. Tickets are $10.
